Whilst it is difficult to think about these things, it is better for your loved ones if you’ve made provisions for them with your last will and property. If you have property and would like to leave it for someone you love or a charity, you need to put that in writing with the help of legal experts specialised in will writing and property.
First thing’s first: you need to value your property, any other assets and put that against any debts you may have. Debts will include your mortgage, any loans or credit card payments and anything owing in your name. If you have no debts, then get your house evaluated.
You need to think carefully about how you want to divide the value of your home. If your will is to leave it to one or more people, you need to state that clearly. Bear in mind that this could create family disputes and probate. So think about who you want to benefit from your last will and property.
Are you donating to charity? Which charity will that be? You need to ensure that their full name, address and registered charity number is accurately written in your will. The charity will be the beneficiaries of your last will and property so accuracy in the information provided is essential.
You need to think carefully about who will execute your will. The executor will be carrying out a work of great responsibility and all the work is quite technical. Be aware that professional will writers are not qualified solicitors and are unlikely to be regulated. A qualified will writing solicitor will be a member of the Institute of Professional Will Writers.
Would you like to speak to us about your Will and who the beneficiaries will be? Please give us a call for a confidential, informal discussion. SG
