Data Protection Licence And Your Company
Does your company have a Data Protection Licence? According to The Data Protection Act 1998, any companies processing personal data must register with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO). Companies then need to acquire a Data Protection Licence (DPL), which needs to be renewed every year.
If your company controls personal information on employees, customers/clients or suppliers, you need to register with the ICO and then apply for a DPL.
A Data Protection Licence is a way of publicly showing that your company complies with data protection regulations. This means that you are, or should be, responsible in the way your company controls data about any living person.
If any of your employees processes personal data stored in an electronic system or in a paper filing system, holding a Data Protection Licence is a legal requirement.
Some companies may be exempt from the Data Protection Act. Your company might process some personal data which relates, for instance, to marketing or PR. DG Law can advise on whether your company is exempt or under obligation.
