Extreme weather can cause enormous anxiety to home owners, as well as buyers and sellers. Flooding can have serious repercussions to the structure and conditions of a home. It can also make you homeless. Often home owners end up having to seek temporary accommodation and sometimes even permanently move out of their flooded homes.
In York, North Yorkshire, some areas are high flood risks but most homes are built with this in mind. However, along the Ouse river, flooding is almost always a certainty when rain falls heavily and continuously. In fact, sometimes all it takes is a day of heavy rainfall for the river Ouse to burst its banks. Some commercial property owners such as pubs and bars by the river, shut their doors in anticipation of high water levels. Sometimes they wait for days until the waters subside.
Home buyers in the UK must be properly advised about risks of flooding anywhere in the country, especially high risk areas by a river or by the sea. Southsea in Portsmouth is an example of an area of high risk, with 1 in 6 homes at a risk of flooding.
