Britain’s Self Induced Migration and Segregation

iStock Purchase - HousingIn a recent release, PwC projected that house prices will increase by 35% in the next six years to an average of £328,000 by 2020, with the average house price in London becoming £565,000.  Interestingly, this release coincided with an Office for National Statistics report highlighting that internal migration is 15 times the rate of immigration into Britain, as parents in their 30s and 40s look to move out of London and other major UK cities to more affordable housing in smaller centres and rural areas.  The conclusion is that cities will become playgrounds for the 20-something and families who lack the resources to move.  Perhaps economics will force the separation and division of communities as effectively as the road networks that carved up large US cities.  However, surely both these projections make uneasy reading.  It is scarcely welcome, to be facing what increasingly resembles a housing market bubble, and likewise society would be the poorer if it became divided between the ‘haves’ and the ‘have-nots’.  Hopefully reports like these will encourage the Government and policy makers to acknowledge that affordable housing is far more than merely an economic issue.  It is an issue with large social and moral ramifications, which has the ability to shape our society and its fabric in far-reaching ways.
