A huge thank you for your generous words of encouragement and most importantly pledges of ££

It was a great day!

Diary of a Novice

Initially fraught when the car engine light came on 10 miles o/s of London – so spent most of journey trying to work out maths of how close we needed to get to venue before I could get out and cycle with kit bag.

So instead of nice relaxed 1.5hr prep and mental focus time. It was more like 45 mins of sh**t where do I park the bike and how do I get my wetsuit on.

Undoubtedly this impacted on my swimming.  Being an open water novice (having never swum in open water other than the bath) I headed off at a great pace only to be broadsided by a lycra clad looney yelling abuse.

Never one to back down straight a way I mouthed gargled verbals back – only to realise I was swimming at 90 degrees to the course. I quickly ducked back under and let the moment pass secretly grateful that I hadn’t ended getting “lost” 400m lake.

Cycling in the above fiasco of transport management I didn’t bring a bike pump. Obviously no-one with their game faces on was willing to lend a pump so off I set on half inflated tyres. The effect meant that the trip round the grounds was like ground hog day with the fat bloke who I overtook on every climb swooning past me on each decent.

The run. On paper the least taxing. But blimey they through in a few bridges and hills grinds you to a standstill. But the hero sprint to the end showed all the prep was worth it – even if in my effort to provide an inane exhausted grin for the camera the bloke hanging the medals nearly cracked my front tooth.

So as you can see a great day all round.

STATS

Swim 23 mins (including the detour)

Cycle 53 mins

Run 31 mins

Change over 1 – 7 mins

Change over 2 – 2 mins****

1hr 55mins – probably some mins missing somewhere!

The second change over was a PB – top 2000 position. Reason – I was a cheapskate with the bike and didn’t’ have proper bike shoes so ran in dropped bike ran out – Genius. Who needs a Canondale!?

Anyway the key thing is your combined efforts helped raise £964.86 for cancer research – that’s 241% of the target. So you can all be justly proud and grateful I didn’t completely f it up for you.
